70 Days of Christmas – 35 Movies You Should See in 2014

Want to know why this is my favorite time of year? The weather outside is fabulous. The leaves are changing. Football is in full swing. The new TV season has begun. And maybe most importantly, the fall and winter movie season has begun! Sure, the summer blockbuster season is amazing. A lot of my favorite movies for this year will have been from the summer. It’s a time for superheros, big action, and big sci-fi. But the fall/winter movie season has taken over as my favorite time to go to the theater. Why? It’s Oscar season! Virtually every major category Oscar nominee will come from a movie that debuts from now until Christmas. Outside of maybe Snowpiercer, Boyhood, and the recently released Gone Girl, every other major future nominee has yet to come out. So how do you know what movies to go find? That’s what I’m here for!

This is my second annual fall/winter movie guide. I have selected 35 movies that are coming out this year that I think will be worth your time. Now, will you go see all 35? No, of course not. I myself only expect to see 25-30 and I see WAY more movies than most people. So I have laid them all out for you here, with trailers for each one. That way you can decide! I take a lot of time to research and find all the movies I can and to see which ones are getting Oscar buzz and which ones just seem interesting. And yes, several of these are big release movies that you already know about like The Hunger Games, Interstellar, and The Hobbit. But for each one of those, I try to find one that you may not have heard of yet. Last year I found 12 Years a Slave and Her, both of which went on to win big at the Oscars.

Of course, there will always be changes that happen and not everyone will be capable of going to see all these movies sadly. At least one of these movies is sure to have it’s release date pushed back to next year. Last year it was with Monuments Men. Also, several of these movies will be small releases that slowly trickle out to the rest of the country. Several of them will never be anywhere besides big cities though. Keep an eye out for several of them on iTunes and VOD the same day as it releases in movie theaters. It is a wonderful new trend for small budget, small release movies to reach a more widespread audience.

I have included a small notation on each movie that I think is a possible Oscar contender in one of the major categories (Best Picture, Director, Script, Actor, Actress). Now of course, not all the movies I have listed are going to be Oscar worthy movies. There are several comedies here and several movies I just think look cool (Young Ones, Exists, etc). And it’s very possible and even likely that at least one of these movies, even the Oscar potentials, ends up being terrible and bombing like The Counselor did last year. There are also several bigger movies coming out that several of you will enjoy that I didn’t put on here (Night at the Museum, Penguins of Madagascar). The reason they were left off? I have ZERO desire to see them and this my list!

So if you are like me, you love seeing the previews when you go to the movies. So sit back and take a look at the list and click on some of the trailers you think might interest you. I encourage you to take a look at a few that you have never heard of! You might just be getting your first look at an Academy Award winner! Enjoy!
