Bill Gates No Longer Microsoft’s Largest Shareholder

While Bill Gates’ name may be synonymous with Microsoft, the company’s founder is not the largest shareholder any more. On Aril 30th, Gates sold 4.6 million shares of his stock, leaving a remainder of 330.1 million shares. Steve Ballmer hoarded shares over the course of his 33 year career at Microsoft and now has a total of 333.2 million shares. Gates has been selling shares of the company he founded on a fairly regular basis, using the money to fund philanthropic endeavors such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Gates recently stepped down from his position as chairman a couple of months ago in order to serve as an advisor to Microsoft’s new CEO, Satya Nadella. Both Gates and Ballmer remain on Microsoft’s board, so despite the fact that neither are serving their previous roles in the technology giant, they are far from done with Redmond Washington.
