CBS Announces David Letterman’s Replacement

On April 3, David Letterman made the announcement that he would soon be retiring from the Late Show. He didn’t have a timetable, but did state that it would be sometime in 2015. Today, CBS has announced that Stephen Colbert has agreed to be the legendary Letterman’s successor, and they have signed him to a 5-year deal . Letterman is the longest serving late night host ever at 21 years, and has long been a fan favorite and was widely regarded to have some of the best interviews in the business. It certainly will be a tough act to follow, but I for one think that they made the right choice.

Colbert is of course the host of Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report. And why he is often playing a character on the show, during interviews we often get a glimpse of the real Colbert and I think he will be a great addition for CBS. Colbert was actually a guest of Letterman’s a few times, (one which can be seen below)  and he called it a highlight of his career. At times like those, when Colbert was just being himself, he was immensely funny and you could tell he was very knowledgeable. Speaking on being chosen to host the Late Show Colbert said, “I never dreamed that I would follow in his footsteps, though everyone in late night follows Dave’s lead. I’m thrilled and grateful that CBS chose me. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go grind a gap in my front teeth”.

Colbert will finish out 2014 doing the Colbert Report on Comedy Central. CBS says they will announce a start date for him once Letterman figures out exactly when in 2015 he will be stepping down. Colbert has informed his team that they will be coming with him to CBS. With Jimmy Fallon doing well on NBC, Kimmel continuing to do well on ABC, and Conan making late night TV relevant on TBS, the addition of Colbert will certainly fully usher in the new age of late night TV.
