Today a surprising (and for me personally, incredibly exciting) announcement came from Lionsgate and Saban Brands, that they will be partnering together to develop and produce an all new film based on the long-standing Power Rangers franchise. Power Rangers has been on the air, first on Fox and now on Nickelodeon, since 1993, and has also seen the big screen twice before in Power Rangers: The Movie ($66 million worldwide) and Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie ($9 million worldwide).
Power Rangers’ basic premise is a group of teenagers who gain the ability to “morph” into super-powered heroes tasked with saving the Earth from alien invaders, using a combination of super powers, weapons, and giant robots called “zords“. The show, after its third season as Mighty Morphin‘ Power Rangers, began a trend of changing the show from season to season, including the series’ name, the look of the Rangers, and the aliens that posed the threat.
The current iteration of the show, Power Ranger: Super Megaforce, is notable for two reasons. The first is that this year’s Rangers have the ability to use the powers, weapons, and zords of the previous 20 years worth of Rangers, and the other is the return of who is arguably the most popular Ranger of all time — Jason David Frank. Frank has played on the show at various times since its first season, notably as the Green and White Rangers, both wildly popular among fans of the series. Since the news this morning Frank has enlisted his considerable social media following to let Lionsgate know that they would like to see Frank involved in the upcoming project.
There has been no official word on whether the new film will follow the loose continuity of the long-running series, or be more of a reboot. There has also been no word on an expected date. Rest assured though, that as more details surface, Free For All will get them to you! Let us know what you think of this initial news in the comments below!
Special thanks to Fpeniche for the amazing feature image.
