Reports from Ars Technia and GameInformer say that soon Microsoft will be removing the paywall that has long held apps like Netflix and Hulu hostage, much to the relief of the internet. While I personally feel like the issue is over-hyped quite a bit, it is still no secret that Microsoft and the Xbox One are fight an uphill battle in terms of both sales numbers and public perception, and this is a move in the right direction, especially to correct the latter of those two problems.
This change will reportedly affect several video streaming apps besides just Netflix and Hulu, though those were the only two named. You will, of course, still have to hold a subscription with whatever streaming service you prefer, but this will at least eliminate the need to also pay for a Gold subscription on top of that. The change is reportedly coming to both the Xbox 360 and Xbox One, though there is no word on when the change might actually take place.
