Paul Rudd Begins Marvel Negotiations for Ant-Man

Confirming rumors that have circled the web for the past few months, it seems as though Marvel Studios has finally found their leading man for the upcoming Marvel Phase 3 film, Ant-Man.  Sources have confirmed to The Wrap and Variety that Paul Rudd, known predominantly for his work in comedies, has entered into early negotiations to play the role of the sarcastic scientist and founding member of the Avengers team Hank Pym.

It will be interested to see if the comedian can hold his own in a fight.

The casting of Rudd certainly seems to solidify what fans should already have known, which is that Ant-Man is going to be following the comedy roots of it’s director Edgar Wright, who has long been one of the best in Hollywood at blending hilarious dialogue with thrilling action beats, like those seen in this years The World’s End or 2010’s Scott Pilgrim vs The World.  The inclusion of Wright, combined with the long history and importance of the characters of Hank Pym help make Ant-Man among the most intriguing and anticipated film currently on the mega-studio’s heavy plate.

In the comics, Pym is known for helping to form the Avengers as well as being a brilliant scientist who created Ultron, the same villainous machine that is serving as the antagonist for 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, though director Joss Whedon has already confirmed that the origins of Ultron are being altered to not include his ties to Hank Pym as the character will not be introduced yet.

CG character models will likely be used to film fight like this, which could help Rudd during his action scenes.

Rudd represents an interesting choice in an action star.  We haven’t really seen him do much physical in his roles, though it’s entirely possible he will be able to shine as Pym without having to be involved in much of the action, after all Robert Downey JR and Mark Ruffalo both benefit from characters who spend most of their action beats portrayed by CG doubles of themselves, rather than having to do much in the way of action scene’s themselves.  With Ant-Man’s size-bending powers it’s easy to see a film that has most of Pym’s action beats taking place with the aid of CG characters rather than live-action one’s.

No matter what, you can be sure that we here at Free4Geeks.com will be following all of this news as it continues to develop, though it’s encouraging to see movement on this project, and a lead actor finally being found.  Keep it tuned here for more details as they become available.
