Shadow of Mordor Using Assassin’s Creed II Code?

Yesterday Warner Bros. showed off the first ever gameplay footage for its upcoming next-gen title, Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor. And while the game does some incredibly original things in terms of enemy AI and player choice, the main character animations might strike you as somewhat familiar. Charles Randall, credited as a team lead in AI fight systems and senior gameplay programmer at Ubisoft Toronto, also noticed something he found familiar, namely what he believes is code from his time working on Assassin’s Creed II being used in WB’s game. Randall did at least admits that he thought that Shadow of Mordor does look like a cool game:

Ubisoft and WB have not commented on Randall’s claims so far, and while anything is of course possible, I tend to hope that the Shadow of Mordor devs have simply taken a rather blatant note from Assassin’s Creed, and have not actually stolen any code from Ubisoft. Only time will tell though. What do you think of the latest and greatest in video game controversy?
