The second trailer for Peter Jacksons The Hobbit finale has dropped from Warner Bros today. In the trailer, fans of the books should be pleased to see the further development of Thorin Oakenshield into the single-minded and greedy dwarf leader as he is portrayed in the classic fantasy novel, as well as the promise of an epic war.
The trailer, seen above, also teases the ending to one of the more drastic changes to J.R.R. Tolkiens book, in the inclusion of the Necromancer saga which had previously only been outlined outside of The Hobbit. The trailer continues to drop not-so-subtle hints toward Sarumans eventual fall from the light, as seen in Jacksons original Trilogy, where he joined forces with the armies of Mordor in an attempt to conquer the world of Man.
It’s hard for me not to feel the same mixed sensations about this new trilogy ending as I did back in 2003 when The Return of the King hit theaters, or even more saddened. There is a finality to this film, the idea that we really never will see another Peter Jackson film set in MIddle Earth, and while The Hobbit series may not have been received as well by some critics and fans, nor seen as the innovative Fantasy Epic that the original trilogy was, it still stands as a series of incredible films dedicated to a novel that has more than stood the test of time. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies comes out on December 17, 2014.
