Watch This, Not That – New Winter/Spring Shows for January 2015

Hello once again friends! I am back! I hope everyone had a terrific holiday season! The new year is here and so are new TV shows. Several have already started here in the first two weeks, and I apologize that I am a little late getting my predictions out there, but I will still cover them here. Things are a little different here in the winter/spring TV season. There are a ton of new shows that will debut, but they are spread out over four months instead of just one to two. So instead of weekly posts, I will be just covering each month. I will also continue to let you know when all the popular returning shows will be debuting and I will try to let you know when shows are returning from their winter break.

Quick explanation for you new readers (welcome!), this is a post that discusses new shows only. Popular returning shows are listed with their date, time, and channel at the bottom so we can be an all inclusive guide for your TV habit. My predictions are based on how I think shows will do in the ratings and if they will get a second season, not if I will like them or not. There are plenty of shows that I think look really good that I also think will get cancelled. I will give my thoughts on each show and my reasons for their prediction. You will also see a quick “Trey Says” line for each show where you get Trey Elliott’s prediction. He will be writing a follow up post each week that will discuss each new show and his thoughts on them and how they are doing in the ratings. That post will cover shows that have been out for two weeks. Look for that tomorrow as he will be discussing shows from this column two weeks ago. It will be titled “WTNT – On Second Thought”, so check it out! At the end of the year, we will tally our predictions and see who comes out on top!

Now, on to the predictions!

Marvel’s Agent Carter – ABC. Tuesday 9 PM ET.

Trey Says – Watch This!

agent carterOne of three that will be listed here that has already started, Agent Carter is fantastic! Based off the Peggy Carter character that was first introduced in Captain America: The First Avenger, this show feels a lot like Alias set in the 40’s. ABC is billing the series as an “event series” (by least favorite buzzword) so feel free to watch with the knowledge that this is probably the only season of the show that ABC is ever planning on doing, so you will get a full wrap-up of the story and not have to worry about cliffhangers at the end. It’s possible that ABC would consider a second season if the ratings were just off the charts good, but so far they aren’t. They are very solid, but not world beating. So just tune in and enjoy the little time we have with this great show!

Empire – FOX. Wednesday 9 PM ET.

Trey Says – Watch This!

empireI honestly could care less about this show, but I do think that it is going to do well for FOX. For all it’s glitz and glamour, this show is really just a family drama. The family just happens to be the heads of a large and successful music production company. Music seems like it will play heavily into the show, with a focus on hip hop and R&B. So if that is for you, you will probably like this show. FOX has sunk a ton of money into marketing for Empire and the fact that it stars Terrence Howard and that it was co-created by Lee Daniels will really help this show take off. It is another show that has already premiered and the initial numbers were stellar. I do expect a bit of a drop off, as most shows do, but I expect that we will be seeing a second season of Empire.

12 Monkeys – Syfy. Friday January 16, 9 PM ET

Trey Says – Watch This!

12 monkeysI could not be more excited for this show! I love the original movie, and the trailers for this show have looked fantastic. Syfy has sneakily been sinking more money into their original shows for the past couple of years and it has really started to show as they have some terrific shows on right now. I think 12 Monkeys will be the next big one. The story revolves around a time traveler that is sent back to prevent the apocalyptic future that he comes from. The story has certainly been told before, but I think this show will do it right for a TV show. It has a sneakily good cast with the fantastic Aaron Stanford, Kirk Acevedo, and Zelijko Ivanek starring. Syfy has put a lot of money into marketing this show, so it would really have to flop for them to pull the plug, and I don’t think that is going to happen.

Galavant – ABC. Sunday 8 and 8:30 PM ET

Trey Says – Not This!

galavantLook, there are few time I have ever wanted to be more wrong about a show. I have already been wrong about it in one aspect. I did not think that this show would be good. At all. I was SO wrong! This show premiered over a week ago, and it is just fantastic. It takes place in medieval times in a fairy tale type world. Think King Arthur. It’s hook is that the show is a musical. I know that music shows have succeeded in the past, but they are very hit or miss and are always a risk. Evidently ABC wasn’t too confident in it either. The show is only a half hour, but they are airing back to back episodes every week, and seem to be hurrying the show along and the show will be done before sweeps even hit in February. That’s not a good sign. On the plus side, the show has actually done well in the ratings so far. It has made me laugh more than any other new comedy this year and the music is very enjoyable. Will all of this be enough to turn ABC around on giving this show a second season? I think it’s doubtful, but I’m hoping!

Backstrom – Fox. Thursday January 22, 9 PM ET

Trey Says – Not This!

backstromOkay, full disclosure, I HATE Rainn Wilson. Is it because his first name is Rainn spelled with two N’s? A little. But mostly it’s because I don’t think he is a very good actor. So yes, that may be swaying me a little here, but I can’t be the only one that thinks this show looks awful. The show is about a self destructive jerk of a cop, that just happens to be brilliant when it comes to his job. Look, I get that House was a great show. But it’s over. Let it go. FOX will never be able to duplicate that magic. It didn’t work for Rake last year and it won’t work for Backstrom this year. I give this show a 0% chance of getting a second season.
